Philippine Rhapsody

Philippine RhapsodyWelcome to Banag-banag’s  20th  anniversary grand Gala night celebration. This year’s theme is  “Philippine      Rhapsody - a Story of Migration,” which celebrates the colourful and often dramatic story of Filipino migration in Australia since the 1860s. Rhapsody means , “a state of bliss,” or “ecstasy.” We chose the theme to capture the energy, colour and dynamism of the Filipinos –   particularly the Filipino migrants in Australia.

The Gala Night is a cultural celebration presented in three parts.

Part 1 “Departure” depicts the Philippine side of the story of     Filipino migration in Australia. Why the Filipinos left the  Philippines.  Part 1 is symbolised by the “kalesa.”

Part 2 “Arrival” presents how the Filipinos have adjusted to living in Australia – how Australia, the huge island    continent down under, has now become home to over 200,000 Filipinos.  Part 2 is symbolised by the  Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Part 3 “The Later Generations” showcases the children of original Filipino migrants.  Part 3 asks if cultural identity from the home country will survive among the later generations as populations move to settle permanently in other countries. It also asks “what is it to be a later generation Filipino-migrant in Australia  - where is the Philippines, and what is the  Philippines for them?”
